Gifted from the artist to the family of the previous owner
The drawing is sold together with a letter from the artist to the family of the previous owner, dated 23 December 1959, in which he states the he "took that picture into Stiles (Alfred Stiles, a Manchester framing company frequently used by Lowry) the day but one after seeing you here.... It will be a nice frame they are putting on it".
The drawing is also accompanied by an explanation of how the family came to own the drawing, stating that it is a study for an oil painting, but that the artist had screwed up and thrown the sketch away on the studio floor.
Please note that the drawing is in its original frame, but has been re-backed and so no longer retains the Alfred Stiles framing label.
