The present work predates and relates to Lowry's The Interrogation of 1962 (see Mervyn Levy, The Paintings of L.S.Lowry, Jupiter Books, London, 1975, no.73), which shows a woman scolding a small boy for breaking a pane of glass. As this happens, another boy, who is the real culprit, laughs to himself behind the woman's back. His sister is ashamed of him for not telling the truth and hangs her head. The Encounter is identical in composition bar the girl's brother who is not present.
