Footnotes
The present work was completed after Lowry accepted a challenge from Mr. Arthur Hunter, of Aughton and Formby, Lancashire, to prove he hadn't lost his ability to depict the crowd scenes of his earlier work. It was commissioned by Hunter for his daughter Mrs Lois Leroy and in a letter to his patron, dated 9 August 1964, Lowry wrote, 'If you are interested and it isn't too late, I have got a small Industrial Scene I could show you on next Monday 10th. If you could manage to call sometime in the morning'. The work is painted from memory and probably depicts Trencherfield Mill.
When sold, it was accompanied with the original letter from L S Lowry to Mr A Hunter.
