Lowry and his parents spent many holidays in the Fylde countryside near Lytham St Anne's. The present work depicts Regent Street in Lytham and an oil of the same subject was painted by Lowry in 1922 (see Michael Howard, Lowry A Visionary Artist Salford, 2000, p.212 (ill.col.).
